Loukoumades – Greek Honey Doughnuts with Honey or Nutella

Golden, crispy on the outside and wonderfully light and fluffy on the inside, Loukoumades are one of Greece's most beloved traditional desserts. These irresistible little doughnuts are served warm, generously drizzled with golden Greek honey, and sprinkled with fragrant cinnamon and crushed walnuts.

A favorite at Greek festivals, family gatherings, and traditional tavernas, Loukoumades bring a little sweetness to every occasion. Enjoy them the traditional way with Laconic Foods raw Greek honey, or try a modern twist with warm Nutella and chopped hazelnuts.

Simple ingredients, beautiful flavors, and a sweet taste of Greece in every bite.

Ingredients

For the Loukoumades Dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup lukewarm water, plus 2–4 tablespoons if needed

  • 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon Laconic Foods Koroneiki Extra Virgin Olive Oil

  • Neutral vegetable oil for deep frying

Option 1 — Traditional Greek Honey Topping

  • ½ cup Laconic Foods raw Greek honey

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ¼ cup chopped walnuts

Option 2 — Nutella & Hazelnut Topping

  • ½ cup Nutella

  • 2–3 tablespoons warm milk, as needed for drizzling

  • ¼ cup chopped toasted hazelnuts

  • Powdered sugar (optional)

Instructions

1. Activate the yeast

In a large mixing bowl, combine the lukewarm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let stand for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.

2. Prepare the dough

Add the flour, salt, and Laconic Foods Koroneiki Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Mix until a thick, sticky batter forms. Add a little extra lukewarm water if needed. The batter should be soft and sticky rather than firm like bread dough.

3. Let the dough rise

Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and place in a warm area for approximately 60–90 minutes, until the batter has doubled in volume and is bubbly.

4. Heat the oil

Pour neutral frying oil into a deep, heavy-bottomed pot to a depth of approximately 2 inches. Heat to 350°F (175°C).

5. Shape the loukoumades

Lightly oil two teaspoons. Scoop small portions of dough with one spoon and gently push them into the hot oil with the other. Work carefully to avoid splashing.

6. Fry until golden

Fry in small batches for approximately 3–5 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown on all sides and cooked through.

Remove with a slotted spoon and transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.

7. Add your favorite topping

Traditional Greek Honey & Walnuts

Gently warm Laconic Foods raw Greek honey until pourable, without overheating. Drizzle generously over the warm loukoumades and finish with ground cinnamon and chopped walnuts.

Nutella & Hazelnuts

Gently warm the Nutella with a little milk until smooth and easy to drizzle. Spoon over the loukoumades and sprinkle with chopped toasted hazelnuts. Add a light dusting of powdered sugar if desired.

Serve immediately while warm and crispy.

A Little Greek Cooking Tip

The secret to perfectly light and fluffy loukoumades is patience! Allow the dough to rise until it becomes airy and bubbly, and make sure your frying oil stays around 350°F (175°C). This helps create that beautiful golden, crispy exterior while keeping the inside soft and fluffy.

For the traditional Greek experience, drizzle with Laconic Foods raw Greek honey just before serving and finish with cinnamon and crushed walnuts.

A Little Greek Tradition

Loukoumades have been enjoyed in Greece for generations and are often associated with celebrations, festivals, and family gatherings. Traditionally served with honey and cinnamon, these golden little treats are a beloved example of Greek hospitality and the joy of sharing food.

Today, modern variations include chocolate, hazelnut spreads, and other sweet toppings, but the classic combination of Greek honey and walnuts remains timeless.
